Innocent Venus : First impressions

by Gwenster on Jan.31, 2007, under Visual Media

I have been going trough my pile of new Summer anime releases and whilst there
were a fewnice shows Innocent Venus wich is Studio “Brains base” latest
production definitly seems to have captured most of my interest .
The studio itself is relativly unkown in the west but like their previous productions
such as Shin Getter robo and Gunparade orchestra , IV is a sci-fi anime at its core .

IV starts off in the year 2010 AD after a giant natural disaster had left most of the countries in the world destroyed .
North America , Russia and Northern Europe froze over .
Low lying plains sank into the sea and the world map changed dramatically as mankind entered a chaotic era .
The global population that totalled 8 billion people were instantly reduced to a little over 5 billion after the wake of the hyper hurricanes that ravaged the planet
As a result economic and military balance was severly disrupted .
The Japanese goverment managed to create a self supporting economic state , and achieved some recovery from the disaster .
” Powered Assist Technology which had long been in development , played an important role in this economic recovery allowing .
The scene of men doing heavy construction work in a sort of powered-suit of some kind reminded me heavily off scenes from BGC where Genom used it`s powerfull Boomers to quickly construct large buildings from the rubbles of Japan .

As you might have geussed it , things are never as peachy colored as
it first sounds , and it would be boring if it were .
Outside the special economic districts of a rebuilding Japan poverty spread like a plague and large slums slowly began to develop .
The people of Japan`s ruling class dubbing themselves ” Logos ” started to strengthen what military the country had left with the afore-mentioned Powered Assist Technology.
The world took notice of Japan`s increase in military technology and couldnt afford to idly sit by so the countries of Asia took over the example set by the unification of Europe into the EU and formed their own Union dubbed the Asian Union . AU for short .
Quickly they dispatched their military forces in an attempt to halt Japan`s rising progress to being a world leader and started their invasion on Japanese soil in Kyuushu .

The forces of the AU were welcomed by a corps of heavy warriors led by gladiators from Japan`s special attack force “Phantom”
With the aid of their impressive mechanised forces they were able to fend off the invasion with overwhelming power .
The AU realising the military supremacy of Japan opted to sign a mutual non agression pact .
With the threat of an invasion put down , Japan focused it`s military forces on hunting down insurgents within the country that were opposed against the harsh living situations imposed upon them by “Logos ” as such , start our adventure with our cast, two ex-members of Phantom Jin and Jo who escape the city together with a 14 year old girl who seemingly holds the interest of the military and Logos .

After their explosive getaway , Jo and Jin succeed in finding a safe spot to hid inside the slums of Revenus .
It is there that we get aquinted with Noto Saya , a spirited young girl that doesn`t seem to have much recollection of her past .
At this point I`m geussing she`s somehow linked to the disaster that struck the world or part of some secret military project .
Hell all speculation goes untill I see more .
Offcourse being the first episode things have to be spicy in order to attract as many followers of the show as possible and it`s no surprise that the military were quick to find the fugitives for an explosive encounter !
Sending in a combination of light and heavy warriors , wich are the shows equivelants of storm troopers and AT-ST walkers respectivly we get to see Jo don his Gladiator , a nimble urban combat mech wich acts like Gasaraki`s mech on speed .

The battle quickly turns in the advantage of Jo and he manages to quickly dispatch the military forces sent to hunt them down .
The action scenes were consistant and of high quality , and the camerawork really comes to life when Jo takes it upon himself to be a one man army either in his master chief esque powered-suit or in his nimble powered-armor.
Where the mechanical units were depicted with 3D CG graphics the regular gruns and characters were done in digital 2D .
The attention on the military hardware is pretty evident in this show and even things such as support trucks are drawn with a good level of detail and authenticness .
Shells fly from every gun fired and the show isn`t too savy on editing out spilt blood by convientantly having the camera pointed elsewhere all the damn time , a practice that happens with lots of shows these days that are supposedly serious and have casualties yet they refuse to show a single drop of blood .

The musical score that accompanies the mayhem isn`t legendary but it suits the animation well .
The only real complaint I have with episode 1 is the members of the current Phantom special forces remind me all too much of the “extended” soldiers from a recent public hit anime ” Gundam SEED ” and it`s annoying sequel “Gundam SEED destiny ”
In short , cocky paranoid young brats with a taste for needless blood
and the name “phantom” sure as hell sounds like “Phantom pain”

With a plausible backdrop setting , interesting machines and good action I will undoubtabtly be watching more of the show .
It`s recommended for anybody who liked the likes of BGC and Gasaraki .
