I’ve already heard about it on Danny Choo a while back, but it wasn’t until Tobin; Noobtoob co-host mentioned it
that I’ve started to look into iKnow, which is AFAIK a free website where you can learn many different languages in an interesting and solid manner.

You are still required to learn your vocabulary somewhere else, but in specific case where I already know a decent amount of everyday Japanese vocabulary i found it very fun and engaging to start on the Hiragana courses.
Hiragana, for those unfamiliar with Japanese writing is one of their 3 scripts and serves as the basic foundation.
Using iKnow it should be more than sufficient to master Hiragana in a month; given that you stick to the program and study 30 items a day; which equals roughly 30 to 40 real-life minutes.

I admit, due to my busy schedule I haven’t been keeping up the pace but what I have learned did stick so I encourage everybody who’d like to start learning how to read Japanese to check out iKnow and get started with the basics; Hiragana ! And who knows, next time I’m in Tokyo I’ll be able to read all those obnoxious non-engrish add signs

Recently iKnow has been re-named and re-branded as smart.fm.
